How to Protect Mining Equipment From Fire

Byron Holmes

Mining equipment is constantly exposed to fire hazards due to the large volume of flammable liquids that are exposed to high temperatures during mining operations. It is therefore necessary to install a fire protection system so that any fire damage can be kept to a bare minimum. This article discusses some of the features that you should consider when selecting that fire detection and suppression system.

Automatic Activation

Some fire detection systems lack the functionality to trigger the fire suppression system to put out a fire that has been detected. Such systems only alert people in the vicinity so that someone can activate the suppression system. This may cause delays that can result in greater damage once the fire spreads. It is better to select a fire detection system that is capable of activating the fire suppression system automatically so that the fire is contained and put out quickly.

Impact on Equipment Operation

Mining equipment is constantly on the move and should not be constrained by any fire detection and suppression system that has been wired to it. One must therefore evaluate the different products that are available so that the one with the least effect on the operation of mining equipment is selected for installation. For instance, some fire detection systems use fire-sensitive tubing that is wired around mining equipment to detect and fight any fire that breaks out. Such a system is the best because it provides protection without hindering equipment performance.

The Power Source

Consider what type of power the fire protection system that you wish to buy uses. For instance, some fire detection systems must be plugged into a power outlet in order to function. This power may be provided through a connection from the battery of the equipment that is being protected. Other fire detection and suppression systems don't require an electrical connection because they rely on independent hydraulic systems to operate. These are much better because they aren't dependent on an external source of energy. Ensure that your mining equipment will have reliable protection by selecting fire detection systems that have their own power sources.

One of the best ways to know what is available on the market is by inviting suppliers to demonstrate how their products can protect your mining equipment from fires. Those demonstrations will give you a firsthand experience of what features can work effectively in your mining operations. You will then be empowered to select the best system for your needs.

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Steve. After studying a lot of books on electrical codes and watching a great deal of videos online, I actually rewired my entire home. In this blog, I plan to give you tips on wiring, electrical safety and more. I also plan to write interesting facts about electricity, but don't expect this blog to be just about electricity--I love tech and other home improvements as well, so you may see posts related to that. Interested in learning? Then, take a look through these posts. I hope they ignite a spark of excitement in you.
